Anxiety app: learn to work with anxiety, one step at a time
Written by a clinical psychologist
Calm Anxiety is a psychoeducation app on anxiety coping skills, with 16 modules and 112 guided sessions drawing on cognitive-behavioural approaches. It offers a free Calm Now tool for moments when anxiety rises and a journey in which your journal stays on your device; it is not therapy and does not diagnose.
Opens in your browser; a short assessment adjusts where the deepening modules sit, based on your answers.

If one of these sentences is yours
- "When I feel anxious I don’t know what to do; I just wait for it to pass."
- "My mind won’t stop, my body is tense and my life keeps getting smaller."
- "I’m looking for something I can learn at my own pace, without telling anyone."
Sentences we hear often; not user reviews.
What is inside
A 16-module programme (12 foundation and 4 deepening modules; the place of some is adjusted to your answers) and a Calm Now tool that is always free. In all, 16 modules and 112 guided sessions; each module is a week of work and progress follows steps, not the calendar.
Topics covered in this section
- Foundation: your pattern, the body’s alarm, attention
Recognising your own anxiety chain, understanding the body’s alarm and redirecting attention without a fight.
- Thinking and worry
Thoughts are not verdicts; telling worry from problem-solving; moving forward with uncertainty.
- Safety behaviours and approach
Noticing what protects you but narrows your life, and approaching things in small steps you choose yourself.
- Inner experience and values
Responding differently to hard feelings and thoughts; finding what you want to make room for in your life.
- Deepening and closing
Relationships, support and boundaries; beliefs, rules, round-two and night modules placed according to your answers; your own coping system.
- Calm Now
A tool that opens with no account and no payment, with short breathing and grounding for moments when anxiety rises, plus support resources.
A sample step from the app: opening a little room with your breath
The breath is tried not to stop anxiety but to open a little room so you can go back to what you want to do while it is there. Using the breath to make a feeling go away can, over time, reinforce the idea that the feeling is dangerous; so this is a tool, not a promise of a result.
- Sit comfortably and let the breath be only as full as is comfortable; do not try to breathe deeply. Breathe in for about four counts and out gently for about six; making the out-breath a little longer than the in-breath is enough. Keep going for a minute or two.
You can stop at any moment. If you feel lightheaded, stop and return to your normal breathing; if you have asthma, a respiratory or heart condition, follow your own health professional’s advice. Breathing does not suit everyone; if it does not suit you, you do not have to push it, and the app has other tools such as grounding and tension release. Chest pain or shortness of breath is a health matter, not an exercise matter: see a doctor or call your local emergency number.
Shortened from the “Open a Little Room With Your Breath” session in the app (module: Understand Your Body’s Alarm).
How the app works
- A short assessment
You answer what you would like to work on and how anxiety touches your daily life. The result is not a diagnosis; it only adjusts where the deepening modules sit. You can skip any question.
- Sessions of a few minutes
Each session has a short piece of information, a thinking step and, most of the time, a small practice to try in everyday life. The reason for each practice is always explained; no step is compulsory.
- In your browser, at your pace
Calm Anxiety opens in your browser; when the mobile apps reach the stores, you will use the same account there. An account is needed only to subscribe, or to use your subscription in the browser; Calm Now asks for none.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an app for anxiety help?
A psychoeducation app can help you understand how anxiety works and try coping skills at your own pace. Calm Anxiety offers short sessions drawing on cognitive-behavioural approaches; it promises no outcome and it is not therapy.
What kinds of anxiety is Calm Anxiety for?
It is aimed at coping with everyday anxiety in general: constant worry, overthinking, tension in the body, avoidance and thoughts before sleep. It is not a treatment for panic disorder or any other anxiety disorder; if you have frequent panic attacks, talk to a mental health professional.
On my phone or in the browser?
For now it opens in your browser. When the mobile apps are published in the stores, you will use the same account there.
Who can see what I write?
No one. Your journal, check-in answers and other answers are stored only on your device; the server holds only your account and subscription status. Notifications never mention an anxiety topic or symptom.
How long does it take?
The programme is 16 modules, each a week of work (12 foundation, 4 deepening); the place of some modules is adjusted to your answers. In all, 112 sessions. Progress follows steps, not dates; you can take breaks.
Is any of it free?
The Calm Now tool and the support resources are always free. The full programme needs a subscription; the options are on the pricing page.
